And while "mining" (as in playing "guess-the-number") is truly parallelized in PoW blockchains, everything else is not. Every write to the chain pushes synchronization.

I wonder how hard it would be to take all of those "intro to web APIs" courses that feature the Twitter API, and instead swap things out so that it's all fediverse stuff.

Part of what made Twitter popular was that its API used to be super open, allowing people to build all sorts of things on top of it.

Voor iedereen die nu heel boos naar de VS kijkt: Ook in Nederland worden kinderen van vluchtelingen opgesloten.

"The frictionless world of online labour markets, free from regulation and the grips of national governments is unleashing the full force of the free market, and causing workers across the globe to undersell themselves and undercut each other. They know, as do their employers, that there will always be someone else who will do it for less."

In which we learn why cooperatives are the only way out of the neoliberal nightmare.

The fact that articles 13 and 11 were approved, (let alone under discussion), shows what a chokehold the copyright industry has on the governments of the world, but I'd think that the #EU would be a bit more cautious at adopting an unpopular position, considering Brexit and what's going on in Italy, Hungary, Austria etc. but no - maybe they just think that nobody can see them.

@Are0h Marx was right that people generally gong to behave according to their class interests even if they say they don't want to.

when push comes to shove the liberal progressive landlord suddenly wants pro-business policies and doesn't want limits on housing discrimination

when push comes to shove nominally anti-racist white people don't want to lose their white bubble of cushy comfort. they want antiracism to be a hobby they choose to engage with

Winter temperatures in Alliance, Nebraska can drop to -20°F (the record low is -40°F/C), but retired mailman Russ Finch grows oranges in his backyard greenhouse without paying for heat. Instead, he draws on the earth's stable temperature (around 52 degrees in his region) to grow warm weather produce- citrus, figs, pomegranates - in the snow.

Remember

Not everyone can self host software systems.

Not everyone wants to self host software systems.

Not everyone gives a shit about tech

Most people just want to go online, do their thing and move on with their day

If there is a mass exodus from GitHub / GitLab or others we people hosting our own infra need to be good about discovery, community building, community engagement and more.

We also need to figure out how to federate authn/authz. I'll skip over submitting small things if it means yet another account on yet another server run by yet another random.

Centralization isn't great but it does facilitate discovery, community and engagement.

We need to keep this at the back of our mind.
