@ralph I've been doing a pay-what-you-want for Odysseus, which has been pushed on my by the elementary AppCenter. When Juno comes out they'll try nagging for payment upon update for me.
I'm happy to report I've got some money out of that, though it's nowhere near enough to support my development time on it.
Beyond that I like to recommend Paul Ramsey's talk "Why Do We Do the Things We Do? Oh, and Open Source Business Models."
