Between 1897-1919 and 1924-1941 the Netherlands taxed the ownership of bicycles. At the end of the first period there where 861.500 taxed bicycles, at the end of the second period 3.600.000.
In the second period, small plates where used to mark that you had paid, unemployed could get a plate for free but where not allowed to cycle on Sundays.
